When you buy local, you’re not only supporting a neighborhood merchant, you’re also re-investing in your community. This holiday season, avoid the door-busters at the mega department stores, and instead, get unique gifts for your loved ones from some of these fine local businesses in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Sweet red wine from Duplin Winery (Rose Hill, NC): The largest winery in the South offers plenty of great gifts for those in the Rose Hill area or coming to and from the beach. Using the finest Muscadine grapes, Duplin bottles dozens of different types of wines, including the top-selling Hatteras Red. Their store also offers beauty products, jams, and sauces from their versatile grapes.

Aunt Ruby’s Peanuts (Enfield, NC): Halifax County is one of the largest peanut-producing counties in state and Aunt Ruby’s mail-order peanut business has spread these delicious (and nutritious) local snacks across the country. Order a can of classic Country Style Peanuts, or if you’re buying for someone with a sweet tooth, send them Chocolate Peanut Clusters.

Seagrove Pottery (Seagrove, NC): Seagrove and its surrounding hamlets are perfect for unique gifts from local artisans. The area is home to over 90 potters can trace their “craft bloodlines” back through as many as 9 generations. The North Carolina Pottery Center is a great place to get started before exploring Randolph County.

Bounty Basket from the Wytheville Farmer’s Market (Wytheville, VA): If you’re trekking through the mountains on the way to Grandma’s house, make a pit stop at the renowned Wytheville Farmer’s Market. With a variety of local vendors, you can put together a holiday bounty basket with blueberry jam from Henley Mountain Berry Farm, grass fed beef from Anderson, squash from Kent Oak Farm, and even homemade soaps from My Shepherd’s Farm. It would make a great gift or help stock up the family for holiday meals.

Fudge from The Fudge Factory (Beaufort, NC): Located on the Beaufort waterfront, The Fudge Factory one of the many eclectic businesses in this historic town.  Stop by the store to taste this delicious fudge made with the finest ingredients. You can also order a half pound (and up to 6 pounds!) of fudge online or over the phone.

Sporting goods from Schofield’s Ace Hardware (Florence, SC): Don’t let the name fool you! Although this 100-year old hardware store sells plenty of tools, paints, and construction materials, Schofield’s also offers a large variety of outdoor equipment for the sportsmen and women in your life. Find hiking boots, fishing poles, hunting rifles, and even the ever-popular Yeti coolers.

Growler from Southern Pines Brewing Company (Southern Pines, NC): Craft brewing is taking over the region and Southern Pines has now joined the party. Southern Pines Brewing Company is the first craft brewery in town and offers a great tap room for gatherings and tastings. If you try something you like, grab a growler to take home and a couple more for gifts.

First Bank Celebrates Twinkal Patel During Women’s History Month Twinkal Patel, First Bank’s Level III IT Specialist, wants to promote growth and education, inspiring others to achieve their goals. Twinkal was born and raised in India. Once she moved to the United States, she obtained her degree in Computer Science. Afterwards, she started her banking career as a manager in training and quickly became a branch manager. Her willingness to learn, along with the skills she has developed from her work experience have made her into the effective leader that she is today. She has had the opportunity to work in several different roles throughout her career, all of which contributed to her knowledge of banking and understanding of different departments. There is nothing she can think of that she hasn’t done, and to her that’s the beauty of working at a community bank. Twinkal stated, “Although with our merger we’re not truly titled a community bank, we are community minded. That’s the key! Being community minded is what we need to always think about and look forward to on a daily basis.” As she thought back to earlier years, she has known the most influential women in her life to be her mother and grandmother. “My mother taught me to be strong, independent, and confident,” stated Patel. For her, Twinkal’s grandmother was a great role model as her kindness, positivity, and compassion touched the lives of so many people. She is so blessed to have these two amazing women in her life, as they continue to motivate her and inspire her every single day. When asked how she views her role as a woman in leadership, Twinkal reflected and stated, “It is very important to empower your team members, regardless of their gender.” She believes that as a leader, we should be establishing an equal and positive work environment, so that each of our team members feel that they are an essential part of the team. Furthermore, we need to always remember that leaders are chosen to set a vision; they encourage and achieve goals as a team, and lead by example to earn the respect of their team members. Twinkal tells other women who want to take on more leadership roles that no dream is too big. 3 min read
Image for tile. First Bank partners with Habitat for Humanity to promote housing affordability There’s no place like home for the holidays. The benefits of homeownership reach far beyond the financial investment and earned equity. Owning a home means long-term security and stability for individuals, families, and economies to thrive. This holiday season, we’re reflecting on our Power of Good commitment to Housing Affordability and our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. “Greater tax generation, creation of jobs, opportunities for economic development, increased job retention and productivity, and the ability to address inequality — all are among the economic benefits of increased access to quality, affordable housing.” – Habitat for Humanity   What does housing-affordability mean? While many factors impact what affordable means to each buyer, housing policymakers generally use the 30% rule that states no more than 30% of your income should be spent on housing. In areas where the average home prices and rental rates exceed the 30% rule for the average citizen’s income, housing is deemed unaffordable and residents are considered to be housing cost-burdened. Nationwide, U.S. Census Bureau data shows that 40% of renters meet the definition of cost-burdened. Additionally, an October 2023 report from Redfin suggests that homebuyers must now earn a $115,000 annual salary to afford the median-priced U.S. home – that’s up more than 50% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing affordability snapshot on the Carolinas As population growth continues to rise across North and South Carolina, it’s proving difficult to keep up with the increase in demand for housing. Many experts point to the combination of limited supply and growing demand for the sharp rise in housing costs. Cost-burdened households in North Carolina represent 45% of renters and 19% of homeowners while in South Carolina those numbers are 50% and 25% respectively.   What are the impacts of cost-burdened households? Households that spend more than 30% of their budget on housing oftentimes experience a snowball effect on other areas of their budget. Many housing cost-burdened households experience food insecurity and are forced to make difficult decisions like choosing between paying a bill or seeking medical care. This also makes it difficult to save for emergencies in the future, and places more reliance on credit card spending. When these difficult circumstances at an individual level become compounded, the entire community’s wellbeing becomes marginalized. First Bank’s commitment to affordable housing As a First Bank client, you’ve made the decision to invest in your community. Our designation as a community bank means that we will always prioritize investing in the communities where we do business. Unlike banks who operate nationally or globally, First Bank is committed to the Carolinas. Banking with First Bank allows you to keep your hard-earned money within your community – where it can do the most good for your neighbors. Our First Bank Power of Good corporate citizenship program has made the following investments in affordable housing: 6 min read
