In 1895, James Walker Tufts purchased nearly 6,000 acres of land in Moore County, NC, and planned on building a resort where people who had tuberculosis could go to recover. He soon had to switch gears when it became known that tuberculosis was highly contagious, and he decided to make the resort into a vacation destination.
