5 Online Money Management Tips

First Bank’s digital banking services provide tools for you manage your personal money, or your business finances, online. Whether you are already with First Bank, or you’re looking for an online money management solution, consider these tips to make online money management easier and more productive.

  1. Enroll in automatic bill pay. Most banks have this feature for online banking customers. Link your bills directly to your checking account to prevent late payments.
  2. Set up account alerts. Stay on top of financial issues that matter to you the most with the alert system. You can set up alerts to occur when a withdrawal happens, when you are close to an overdraft, or when a credit card payment is due. Alerts are deliverable via text or email.
  3. View statements online. Before digital banking, bank statements were mailed. For a busy account, a single month could amount to pages upon pages of transactions. Online money management allows you to access your statements without wasting paper. Also, you can use the search feature to easily find specific charges.
  4. Track spending patterns. With online money management, it’s easy to access your withdrawal history. Use that data to produce a graph or table that tracks your spending habits. By tracking your spending history, you can pinpoint ways to stay on budget.
  5. Quick, easy access to money. Easily transfer funds between accounts and view budgets and cash flow.

11 Easy Tips for Saving Money Saving money is important if you want to be prepared for future financial surprises or hardships and establish peace of mind. But sometimes, finding extra funds to set aside is a challenge. These simple money saving tips can show you new ways to save and fill your savings account up in no time. 11 Great Money Saving Tips 1. Switch your bank account. If your current bank account charges you fees, you might consider switching to a bank that offers you ways to keep your account hassle free. First Bank* offers five different checking account options. 2. Save loose change. Save money by storing loose change in a jar. Once the jar is full, you can cash in the change at your bank and deposit the money into a savings account. 3. Create a budget. By creating a budget, you’ll be able to see where you can cut back your expenses and save money each month.  4. Making a shopping list and stick to it. Instead of going to the store without a plan, try creating a shopping list and not straying from it. This way you won’t be tempted to buy things you don’t absolutely need. 5. Avoid dining out. Dining out is expensive. You can save a ton of money each month by simply eating at home. And if you have to eat out for an event or because you’re running low on time, you won’t feel guilty spending the money because you’ve been saving all month. 6. Cancel cable. As great as television is, cable is an unnecessary expense. If you’re really looking for ways to save money, consider canceling your cable subscription. 7. Make coffee at home. The average American worker spends about $14.40 on coffee per week. By making coffee at home, you could save around $1,100 annually. 8. Cancel unused memberships. Have a gym membership you never use? What about a subscription to a magazine you never read? Look at all of your recurring membership fees and cancel the ones that you’re not using on a regular basis. 9. Shop generic. Often, generic items are just as good as their name brand counterparts. Choosing the generic brand when grocery shopping can save you tons of money on your bill. And to save even more money, don’t forget to sign up 3 min read
Image for tile. Lock It Up: Protect Your Login Info These days an increasing number of people are online creating accounts for shopping, streaming services, or to stay connected with other people. Of course, with all those accounts on various websites, who wants to create a different username and password every time? Well, it turns out the extra effort is worth it. Having different logins for your online shopping or subscription accounts can reduce your risk of fraud. Here’s why: if you use the same username and password across multiple sites and one of them is compromised, access to the other sites is automatically at risk. Fraudsters will then use the stolen credentials on those other sites to see if they can gain access and attempt various forms of fraud or other data mining activity. Please note: First Bank has several protective measures in place to ensure that your information is secure and that your account is safe from this type of fraud. But your other online accounts may not be so well guarded. Here are some tips to help you make each of your log-ins stronger and more secure: Use different login information. Not surprisingly, this is the best thing you can do to keep fraudsters out of your retail or subscription accounts. This means you will need to resist using your favorite username or password over and over again because it is the easiest to remember. Create strong/unique usernames and passwords. When using different usernames and passwords, use information that is not easily identifiable, but something you can remember. The more complex, the less likely it is to be guessed. One more tip: use numbers, capital letters, and special characters throughout your username or password, not just at the beginning or end. Enable two-factor/multi-factor authentication where available. By enabling this feature, a user is provided a second form of identification to verify a log in attempt. Think of it as a second layer of protection against potential attackers. This can be as simple as receiving a code via text or email, or clicking a link to confirm a log in from an unfamiliar device. Keep second factor information confidential. Never give out your second factor code to anyone – even if they say they are from a favorite 3 min read
