Banking on Business: Webinar Replay, Recap & Takeaways

Running A Business 4 min read

Our recent webinar was an engaging roundtable that brought together financial experts and community business leaders to discuss essential strategies for business growth and financial management. Moderated by Joe Diggs, SBA Sales Leader at First Bank, the discussion covered vital topics, including bank relationships, cash flow management, credit strategies, and fraud prevention.

Here’s a replay, recap of the main takeaways and next steps for our community of small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Main Topics Covered

Building Strong Bank Relationships

Our experts emphasized the importance of choosing a banker who understands your business, is invested in the community, and can offer sound advice. Rob Patterson, Community Banking Executive at First Bank, highlighted that business owners benefit from bankers who are transparent and willing to say “no” when necessary. A banker with a knowledgeable team of experts in areas like government lending and treasury services can become an invaluable partner

Jenna Williams, Director of Treasury Services, added that transparency and honesty from your banker contribute to a long-term and productive relationship. Having a banker that prioritizes building strong connections and acts as a strategic advisor helps businesses navigate financial complexities more effectively.

Managing Costs and Optimizing Cash Flow

Treasury management tools, technology solutions, and close monitoring of financial flows were key strategies discussed for cost control. Karen Smith, Business Development Officer, explained that First Bank’s business account solutions, for example, offer valuable benefits like telehealth services for employees, helping business owners save on operational expenses.

Jenna highlighted the importance of maintaining real-time cash flow insights and employing tools to improve operational efficiency. She also recommended that businesses should consider seasonal financial planning, optimize invoicing, and use resources like lines of credit and money market accounts to manage cash flow gaps during different seasons.

Fraud Prevention and Security Measures

Given the rise in fraud and data breaches, the panel stressed the need for security measures like software protection and employee training. Rob Patterson suggested that business owners be proactive by using secure software, staying alert for suspicious activity, and maintaining close relationships with their bankers for additional fraud prevention.

Building secure relationships with vendors was another focus, with experts advising that business owners should inquire about a vendor’s data protection measures before entering agreements, especially with out-of-state or lesser-known companies.

Financing for Business Growth and Expansion

For businesses preparing to borrow funds, panelists shared insights on securing business credit and ensuring the accuracy of financial statements. Rob Patterson explained that good personal credit, organized and up-to-date financial records, and having a clear plan for loan repayment are critical for securing financing.

Joe Diggs, SBA Sales Leader, advised that businesses with consistent revenue and sustainable growth are more likely to secure credit. He also touched on common pitfalls, such as tax return discrepancies, that can hinder financing efforts.

Next Steps

To support continued growth and success, First Bank encourages business owners to:

  • Review Your Banking Relationship: If you’re not getting the strategic advice you need, consider working with a banker who’s invested in your business’s long-term success. A proactive banking relationship can add value beyond the basics.
  • Enhance Financial Monitoring: Regularly track cash flow, maintain organized financial records, and look for areas to automate for efficiency gains. Employing digital tools for real-time insights can make a significant difference in managing costs and optimizing cash flow.
  • Prioritize Security: Invest in robust security measures and ensure your vendors have safeguards in place. Staying vigilant about potential fraud threats and maintaining secure business practices are essential for protecting your business.
  • Prepare for Funding Needs: Ensure your business financials are well-organized, and keep your credit history in check. Regularly review your financials and establish a relationship with your banker so that when financing needs arise, you’re prepared.
  • Engage with Your Community: For young entrepreneurs, building connections and finding mentors within your industry and community can be transformative. Don’t rely solely on technology; take time to build face-to-face relationships with trusted advisors.

As we reflect on the ideas shared in this webinar, it’s clear that building a resilient and successful business requires much more than good products and services. Developing strategic partnerships, staying proactive with cash flow management, and safeguarding against fraud are essential practices that empower businesses to navigate challenges and seize growth opportunities. For business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs alike, the journey involves building connections—whether with a trusted banker, mentor, or fellow business owner—to gain the insights and support needed for long-term success.

There are loans that cater to the established business looking to expand, and there are loans for the entrepreneur just getting started. The team at First Bank can help you choose the financing that’s right for you. Business Financing Options Shopping for loans can be overwhelming because of the large number of options available. Here’s a quick overview of some common types of business loans: Secured Loans Lenders offer secured loans because they are low risk. The borrow is required to put up collateral in exchange for the financing. Unsecured Loans Unsecured loans do not require the buyer to put up collateral. Approval for unsecured loans often depends on the borrower’s available capital and credit score. Short-Term Loans Short-term loans serve as a quick infusion of cash that requires swift repayment. Long-Term Loans A long-term loan is financing that is repaid over more than 12 months. If you’re needing to acquire assets for your business, this may be the right option for you. SBA Loans The Small Business Association (SBA) is a government agency that helps small businesses find loans. If you do not qualify for a traditional loan, you may be eligible for a loan through the SBA. If you’re just starting out, an SBA loan may be right for you. First Bank SBA has financed thousands of small businesses. SBA Loan Options Some common types of loans from the SBA include: 7(a) loans This common and versatile loan provides the necessary financing to launch a new business or to acquire or expand an existing one and can provide up to $5 million with terms stretching up to 25 years. Microloans Microloans are similar to the 7(a) loan but finance only up to $50,000, with repayment terms reaching up to six years. CDC/504 loans CDC/504 loans provide long-term and fixed-rate financing for the acquisition of real estate and expensive assets. New Goombays Owners Goombays Grille & Raw Bar Joins First Bank We’re proud to welcome Kill Devil Hills landmark restaurant Goombays Grille & Raw Bar to First Bank. Goombays has been an island hot spot since 1992 and recently changed ownership in March 2023. The vibrant chartreuse and aqua building matches the excitement that Goombays new owners, Tony Sipe and Chris Miller, have for their Kill Devil Hills, NC establishment. First Bank SBA Business Development Officer, Chase Zabriskie, was instrumental in securing the funding that Tony and Chris needed to purchase Goombays from its original owners. Commitment and diligence from everyone involved resulted in a custom SBA financing solution that fit Tony and Chris’s unique needs as first-time business owners. “Chase was so invested in our success that we started to think of him as one of our partners. Chris and I have already referred other friends to First Bank and their SBA program, and we will continue to do so. First Bank and Chase will be the first phone call we make when we are ready for our next project.” – Tony Sipe, Goombays Grille & Raw Bar Co-owner   “Quite a few hurdles were jumped along the way. I became not only their trusted banker but a friend who was there to encourage them to keep trying even when it seemed like there was no longer a way forward. Using both our SBA 7a and 504 products, we were able to piece together a creative financing structure that fit the needs of both our borrowers and the sellers. We closed in March 2023 and I was right there with them at the closing table.” – Chase Zabriskie, First Bank SBA Business Development Officer   The Goombays Grille & Raw Bar menu is a crowd-pleasing assortment of seafood, shareable appetizers, and menu staples like burgers, sandwiches, and salads. There’s something for everyone and all ages are welcome. Even their cocktail menu is inclusive — all Goombays bartenders are trained on how to transform their island inspired cocktails into non-alcoholic mocktails. We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Goombays to First Bank! As a result of our ability to secure their business financing, Tony and Chris chose First Bank to also be their primary banking partner. They utilize our SBA 7a and 504 products along with multiple Business Elite Accounts, and Business Credit Cards. We’re proud to offer custom financing solutions to help our neighbors pursue their goals and dreams. For anyone considering an SBA loan, get in touch with our First Bank team of SBA Experts. Navigating SBA programs can be difficult if you’re unfamiliar with the programs. Chase offers the following advice:   Identify Your Goals: Take time to share as much information as possible about what goals you are looking to achieve through SBA financing. Consult With An Expert: Your First Bank SBA expert can guide you through the process and make recommendations for how best to go about structuring your financing. Start Early: Getting ahead of the game on any potential SBA hurdles is the key to keeping the process smooth and efficient. Having an early conversation and choosing the right lender can be the difference in how quickly you get to the closing table. To celebrate our First Bank partnership, the Goombays team sent us this Blueberry Mai Tai mocktail recipe. Cheers! 4 min read
