“I don’t like Fruitcake”

Not a fan of fruitcake? Neither was Berta Lou Scott until she perfected her version in the 1980s. Her Southern Supreme Fruitcakes have been converting fruitcake foes to fans ever since.

A Sweet Success Story

Berta Lou Scott’s fruitcake started as Christmas gifts for her friends, family, and clients in their hometown of Bear Creek, NC. Mrs. Scott’s baked goods were always sought after throughout the holidays, but her fruitcake especially garnered attention for its ability to change the minds of those who claim to not like fruitcake. As demand for her fruitcakes increased Mrs. Scott’s late husband, Hoyt Scott, took out a small business loan to increase their production capacity. The Scott family tells their First Bank story like this:

“It all started around 1989 when our father/father-in-law “Hoyt Scott” wanted to take out a small business loan. At that time Mr. Jimmie Garner was who we went to see. The story that Hoyt liked to tell was, “I didn’t know who the bigger fool was: the man who wanted to borrow the money to start a Fruitcake business or the man who would loan him the money.” That is what started our relationship with First Bank.”

As it turns out they weren’t fools after all. Jimmie Garner went on to become the CEO of First Bank and Hoyt Scott (along with his family) grew Southern Supreme Fruitcakes from their garage to a 40,000 square foot manufacturing, distribution and retail operation where they attract thousands of tourists each year and ship their products globally.

Not your typical Fruitcake

Two big differences set Berta Lou Scott’s fruitcake apart from the rest. Her recipe favors nuts over candied fruit, and her method of slow baking and stirring the dough as it bakes keeps the cakes from becoming dry. In fact, Southern Supreme Fruitcakes will stay fresh and moist without refrigeration for 6 months to a year.

This unique baking method has posed a unique set of challenges that the Scott Family has overcome with hard work and ingenuity – something that is on display throughout their manufacturing facility. Thousands of guests tour their kitchen yearly to get a first-hand view of the one-of-a-kind operation which involves a rotating oven that allows trays of dough to move from baking to hand-stirring every 15 minutes until complete. Teams of seasonal workers begin fruitcake production in August and at the height of the Christmas ordering season, they will slowly bake and stir over 3,000 pounds of fruitcake per day.

A Multigenerational Banking Relationship

“First Bank has been very instrumental in helping us build Southern Supreme Fruitcake & More to what it is today. We have had a good working relationship with Mr. Garner’s grandson Matthew Powers as we continue to do business with First Bank. During this time we have constructed a 40,000 square feet manufacturing, retail and mail order facility. Thank you First Bank for believing in us and continuing to support us in where we are now.”
– The Scott Family, Owners of Southern Supreme Fruitcake & More

“It’s been a pleasure to partner with the Scott Family and Southern Supreme for the past 9 years. As their banker, I feel lucky to have worked alongside of them to collaborate and find our best financial services that fit their daily operational and growth needs. I’ve truly enjoyed being a small part of their continued growth and seeing their business adapt as needed. Through the years, we have not only been business partners but we have become friends as well.”

A lot has changed in the 30+ years since First Bank funded Hoyt Scott’s small business loan in 1989. Southern Supreme has seen tremendous success and continues to expand their capacity and product offerings to include more than just fruitcakes. First Bank has grown from twenty-something branches in North Carolina to 118 branches and multiple support centers across both North and South Carolina.

What remains the same is the level of trust and support between First Bank and Southern Supreme. Whether they have needed payroll services solutions, commercial loans to expand, merchant services to handle increase in demand, or checking accounts and lines of credit – we’ve proudly been there with them every step of the way.

FHA Loans 101: 3 Major Requirements If you have a strong understanding of the FHA loan requirements, you’ll experience a quicker and smoother loan application process. FHA loans provide homebuyers of all income levels the opportunity to purchase a home with lenient qualifying terms and lower down payment requirements. There are, however, three major requirements that prevents people from purchasing an unaffordable home. Three Major Requirements Debt-to-Income Ratio:There are two debt-to-income ratio requirements that FHA lenders will look at in order to determine if a buyer can afford a home: Mortgage payment expense to effective income: Add your total mortgage payment and divide it by your gross monthly income. The maximum ratio to qualify is 31%. Total fixed payment to effective income: Add your total mortgage payment and all recurring monthly debt and divide it by your gross monthly income. The maximum ratio to qualify is 43%. FHA Credit: FHA loans are more lenient when it comes to qualifying terms, but there are still certain credit requirements applicants must meet. If you have no credit history, filed for bankruptcy, have a history of late payments, been foreclosed on, or sent to debt collections, it will be harder to get approved for a loan. Application: Aside from financial requirements, there are a few FHA loan application requirements buyers must meet and present to their loan officer: Address (past two years) Social Security number Names and location of your employers (past two years) Gross monthly salary at your current job(s) Information for all checking and savings accounts Information for all open loans Complete information for other real estate you own Approximate value of all personal property Certificate of Eligibility and DD-214 (for veterans only) Current check stubs and your W-2 forms (past two years) Personal tax returns (past two years), current income statement, and business balance sheet for self-employed individuals If you understand the FHA loan requirements and are ready to apply for a loan, you can apply online with First Bank.* Have more questions about FHA loans? Image for tile. Fraud Alert: Impersonation Scams What’s an impersonator scam? Fraudsters can mask their phone numbers and email addresses to look like they are contacting you on behalf of someone at First Bank. They will ask you to validate your account by providing your online banking username, password, or secure access code. With this information, they could attempt to hack into your account. How to avoid this scam: To keep your accounts safe, remember that First Bank will never ask you for a security code, multifactor authentication code, username, or password. Your login credentials should never be shared with anyone. If someone contacts you from First Bank and asks for any of this information, hang up and stop all communication immediately. Manually dial our customer support team at 1-866-792-4357 and report the incident. What does an impersonator scam look like? Impersonator scams start with a phone call, text message, or email that appears to come from a trusted source—like First Bank, a government agency, or a well-known company. The scammer will spoof the caller ID or email address to make it look legitimate. Here’s an example of what a fraudulent text message could look like. Notice that the text message on the left asks for User ID and the other is prompting you to click a fraudulent website link. The scammer will create a sense of urgency or a situation where you need to take some sort of action – like replying to a text message or clicking a link. From there, they will ask for sensitive details like your online banking username, password or a secure access code. These scams can be highly convincing, often using official sounding language. Stay Vigilant, Stay Secure Impersonator scams are designed to catch you off-guard, but with awareness you can stay one step ahead. Always remember: First Bank will never ask for your login credentials, secure access codes, or personal information through unsolicited calls, texts, or emails. If something feels off, trust your instincts—hang up, don’t click, and contact us directly.
