Credit-building FAQs

Tips and common questions about building a positive credit history from using a secured card.

When you sign up for our secured credit card, First Bank will report the account to the three credit bureaus. Then when you use your card and make your payments on time, you can build a positive credit history that can help you establish new and additional types of credit in the future. The following will help you get the most out of your card:

High utilization can negatively impact your credit score. If do you carry a balance from month to month, don’t let your debt balance exceed 30% of your credit limit.
Responsible card use and on-time repayments will help you build a good credit history.
When you are first building good credit, do your best not to carry a significant balance on the card.
Not only with credit accounts but also with other accounts, such as utility bills. This way, you won’t risk forgetting about your payments.
If you apply for too much credit in too short a period of time, your credit score will fall.
Loans subject to credit approval. See this recent sample Credit Card Agreement and Secure Credit Card Addendum for additional information about the general terms on our credit card products.
